This guide describes concepts and rules for the design of more inclusive internet journey planners. It is the outcome of detailed user-centred evaluation of existing journey planners and extensive research into the needs and behaviour of people for who are at greatest risk of being excluded from travel. This research generated over 60 specific design rules, 37 of which are presented here. These rules for content and presentation make up three main concepts; Optimised Personalisation, Genuine Journey Choice and Rich Journey Plans.

The design rules are illustrated using images of the i-Journey Prototype. Beyond being an implementation of the design rules, the i-Journey Prototype demonstrates a "Design for All" approach. It shows how a journey planner that meets the information needs of disabled users can be intuitive, efficient and rewarding for all users.
